American outdoor camping market continues to be hot camping products consumer demand


Outdoor camping is a kind of outdoor life style, which is recognized as one of the four major tourism projects (leisure, camping, picnic, rafting) in the world that has never been in decline. It mainly sets up temporary outdoor living camps for the purposes of tourism vacation and military needs. Currently, the common outdoor camping equipment in the market includes basic equipment such as backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, air cushion, gas stove and cooking utensils, as well as auxiliary equipment such as telescopes, hiking poles, various knives, compasses, functional watches and GPS positioning.

In recent years, with the continuous development and progress of the society, more and more people are keen on outdoor sports, although in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, some people's enthusiasm for sports is still high. In the United States, for example, nearly 230 million people exercise in 2020, with a participation rate of about 76 percent. This is mainly due to the continuous increase in participation in outdoor sports. During the pandemic, outdoor sports in the United States have shown great vitality, with hiking and mountaineering the largest participants, reaching 11.4 million and 57.8 million in 2020, up 2.3 percent and 16.3 percent, respectively. And outdoor camping as an activity in outdoor sports, its market development speed is relatively fast.

According to the "2022 U.S. Outdoor Camping Industry Market Status and Feasibility Study of Overseas Companies" released by the Industry Research Center, in terms of the number of participants, in 2021, the number of outdoor camping participants in the United States exceeded 66 million, among which the number of first-time campers reached more than 8.3 million, accounting for about 12.6 percent. In terms of market penetration, more than 86 million families have participated in outdoor camping activities in the United States, and the market penetration rate is close to 65%. Most of them are exquisite camping and gradually extend from cities to sinking markets. In general, compared with other countries, the outdoor camping market in the United States started earlier, developed faster, and has formed a relatively stable consumer market in China.

The continuous improvement of the outdoor camping industry in the United States also stimulated the further release of the market demand for camping supplies. In the past decade, the sales volume of outdoor sports products market in the United States has maintained an increasing trend year by year, reaching more than 166.8 billion US dollars by the end of 2021, among which the camping products market scale exceeds 31.2 billion US dollars, accounting for about 18.7% of the total revenue of the outdoor products market in the United States. Products such as flashlights, coolers, backpacks, air beds and tents are popular among American campers. In this context, many Chinese camping supplies brands have aimed at the American market. According to the General Administration of Customs, China exported 21.04 billion yuan of canopy, tents and camping supplies by the end of September 2021, while imports totaled 0.7 billion yuan, resulting in a trade surplus of 20.9 billion dollars. Among them, the United States is one of the main export markets for China's outdoor camping supplies.

With the continuous development and progress of society, more and more people are keen on outdoor sports, although some people's enthusiasm for sports remains high in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to US market analysts.  Compared with other countries, the outdoor camping market in the United States started earlier, developed faster, and has formed a relatively stable consumer market in China.  During the pandemic, the outdoor camping market in the United States continued to be hot, thus releasing the consumer demand for camping products, which also provided opportunities for Chinese products to enter the American market.
